Is it Frosting or is it Icing?
After much debate, Amy & Chris have decided that Frosting is thick, and creamy.... like buttercream, and icing is thinner, which simply covers the surface of the cake. While reading up on the differences, we have found that many people believe that the titles are interchangeable i.e. Soda & Pop. We believe that Frosting is perhaps a newer term, since the 1964 edition of The Joy of Cooking, only lists 'Icing' , whereas the 2006 edition lists both.... and the Rombauer family knows all!

Hmmm...a topic certainly worthy of discussion! I was always under the impression that frosting is the thicker, butter based topping that covers the entire cake, while icing is a thin mixture of powdered sugar and milk that is meant for drizzling.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ms. Gagliardo for making an astute observation. It is common for a powder sugar drizzle to be called "icing" in some regions of our country. However, in Cincinnati, where we are located, and have a very rich heritage in German bakeries, such a drizzle is called "glaze".
